Preparing for a job interview
So, you have got through the application process, now you have a job interview. To make sure you are prepared and on your A game, follow the guide below.
Outcome
To understand the questions asked in an interview and how to prepare for them.
Let's start with why this is important:
- preparing for a job interview will mean you're less stressed and able to answer your questions confidently
- you will have answers ready for questions so you won't have nothing to say during the interview
- more likely to get the job if you are prepared and arrive on time
Information
Learn how to be your best self in your interview by watching this video.
Here is a list of five common interview questions and how to answer them:
- Tell me about yourself.
This question is really asking about your experience, skills and education level. Keep it short & sweet.
- What interests you about this job?
This question is about making sure you don't just want a job but want this specific job. Make your answer relevant to the role e.g. "This role allows me to build on my skills...."
- What are your strengths?
Think of three or four strengths and focus on how these have impacted your previous employer or educator.
- What did you like/dislike about your previous job?
Always keep this positive and focus on the culture and organisation.
- What are you weaknesses?
Explain only one and make it into a positive e.g. "I am told I work too hard and as such I have to work on setting more time aside for myself."
What to do next
Research before the interview
Now that you have a job interview, spend 10mins on the company's website completing this grid.
Plan how to get to your interview
Work out how far the interview is from your house if it is in person. Plan ahead and know how long it takes and how you will get there.
If it is a video interview, make sure you have downloaded the app the interview is on e.g. Zoom and make a video call with a friend using the app so you are comfortable with it
What to wear to the interview
Decide on what you will wear before to make sure your outfit is clean. If it is a formal job in an office you will need to wear formal clothes, however, if it is a group interview or an interview for retail or hospitality, smart casual such as pants, collared shirt, dress, boots, shoes will be fine, best to avoid denim and sneakers until you get the job.
